Strange Seagate problem

With PC3000 UDMA:

I'm working with a Seagate ST330831AS that stays in busy mode and will not come ready. I've tried two different PCBs, transplanting the ROM each time.

The drive spins up but I can't detect a seeking noise. I have not opened it.

Here's the odd thing: If I remove the PCB from the drive, serial access works fine and the ROM can be read and written. However, once I put the PCB back on the drive the serial access will time out and I can't access terminal mode.

If I do a power cycle within the utility, this is the message in Terminal:

Interface task reset
4096 x 16 buffer detected
Tonka-1_Disk S.00 01-11-05 11:50

However, the drive comes out of busy and all of the user commands time out.

What gives?

Thanks

Jon

Hello jono my suggest check the platters we had check , many seagate´s with tendence to head crash :(

If I remove the PCB from the drive, serial access works fine and the ROM can be read and written. However, once I put the PCB back on the drive the serial access will time out and I can't access terminal mode.

Maybe u got a shortcut between PCB and MHA, maybe there are some problems a shorcut on the MHA; last year we got a Hitachi problem, on that case i put a piece a paper between the MHA flex connection and PCB, to know the problem and the solution

Best Regards

Thanks, Alberto. I'll try the paper over the MHA contacts. Some drives require communicating with the MHA before they will POST and spin up. I seem to remember that Seagate is one of them, but I'll soon find out.

If I recall correctly, there was a short in either the VCA or the head stack that caused this problem.
